“Look Ahead, Read Ahead”
This painting, the first in my “Music Lessons” series, is a visual echo of a profound lesson learned from Mrs. Hosoi, my children’s extraordinary violin teacher. Though I never had the chance to learn an instrument, I’ve absorbed her wisdom while observing her masterful instruction: “Look ahead, read ahead, and use your head.” This principle, vital to music, mirrors the meticulous process of creating art. Look at your position first, where are you in relation with your instrument? Read the next measure as you begin to play, always read one measure ahead before you get to it; finally, think quickly about how you will react throughout the musical experience. Each brushstroke, like a single brick in a grand structure, builds towards a cohesive whole. The geometric structure of this piece, providing the visual dimension that connects color.
